We consider it important to conceptualize romantic relationships, just like other areas of life, in terms of behavior-environment interactions. This allows us to understand these interactions from a natural science point of view. Behavior Analysis, RFT, and ACT Over the past two decades in particular, a promising new behavior analytic conceptualization of human language and cognition has been gaining empirical support.

Consequences can involve either the receipt of a stimulus or the removal of a stimulus, and either of these types of consequence can be reinforcing or punishing. An increase in behavior due to the addition of a stimulus is known as positive reinforcement. For example, if you smiled at another person more often when the other person reliably smiled back, we would say that your smiling was positively reinforced. Further, the smiling of the other person is referred to as a reinforcing or appetitive stimulus.

For example, we might argue that cognitive psychology has led to the creation of a vast multitude of models of aspects of cognition, but relatively little in the way of practical interventions to actually change human behavior. This lack of practical applications for knowledge of psychology is a serious one. The psychological approach adopted in this book is founded on an alternative worldview called contextualism. The root metaphor of contextualism is the “event in context,” in which every phenomenon is an “event” that happens in a context that determines the nature of that event.
